Home Sweet Home

I finally got around to making a video tour of our apartment! Hope you enjoy.

Today we got our washer. As you are probably gathering by now, it's difficult to get anything in and out of Dutch houses because of the narrow and steep staircases and overall smallness of everything. Well, when our washer was delivered, just like the wardrobe, they delivered it out on the front sidewalk, leaving us to fend for ourselves as to how to get it up the stairs. Now,I'm not sure how many of you have actually lifted a washer before but this one was heavy. At least 200lbs. So Dan and I hemmed and hawed, tried different ways to get it up, but the staircase was barely wide enough for the washer to fit through , so it didn't leave us much wiggle room. Finally, Dan pushed up the washer and I stood behind him, holding his feet so they wouldn't slide. Then he pushed it up and over, until my washer was upside down. This is how we proceeded to get it up the stairs...end over end. It was amazing. and scary. and hilariously funny.

But that is not where our washer story ends. No siree. That would be almost TOO easy, to simply have to turn your washer end over end to get it up stairs. Later, Dan decided to clean out the filter, as we had heard it helped prevent your washer from making your clothes smell mildewy. He later put the filter back in and started a cycle. We were in the bedroom watching a show when we both kind of looked at each other at the same time and made a run for the kitchen. The entire corner of the kitchen was submerged under an inch of water. The filter had not gotten in right and all the water that was supposed to be filling up our washer, was  now suddenly filling up our kitchen floor. So we grabbed all the towels we had and started sopping up the mess. We replaced the filter correctly and waited around and watched this time to make sure no water was pouring out.

Ahhhh, so that was the end of the washer excitement. . .or was it? Knock, knock, knock goes our door about 45minutes later and our neighbor came to tell us that maybe our washer was leaking because there was water pouring down the walls in the stairwell. The washer was no longer leaking but from the original flood, it had apparently seeped through the walls and out into the stairwell. Sigh. So we've spent the past few hours cleaning up water from both inside and outside of our apartment. Oh the joys of adulthood.

  2. Question, why was Dan cleaning out the filter on a brand new washing machine?

  3. The apt is cute! Love all the windows and sunlight you have! You two are truly having an adventure. I'd hate to be a single lady trying to figure out how to get that washer up the stairs.
